How to extend an Ethernet network without laying new cables?

Post by yokowab9 »

Hey everyone, I’ve got a bit of a situation at home. My office is in the attic, but my router is on the ground floor. I tried using Wi-Fi, but the signal is weak, and I get random disconnects during video calls. Running a new Ethernet cable isn’t really an option since I’d have to drill through multiple walls and floors. I looked into powerline adapters, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about them. Has anyone dealt with something similar? How did you extend your network without running new cables?

Yeah, I’ve been in a similar situation. In my case, I needed to connect my gaming PC in the basement to the router upstairs. Wi-Fi was unreliable, and powerline adapters didn’t work well because my house has old wiring. What worked for me was using an Ethernet extender, which basically allows you to push your Ethernet signal over longer distances without losing speed. You might want to check out some info on long ethernet cable to see if extending your existing network is a good option. It saved me a ton of hassle, and I didn’t have to open up any walls!

Funny timing—I just moved into a new apartment and realized how much of a headache networking can be. My place has thick concrete walls, and even Wi-Fi extenders don’t help much. I’m not exactly dealing with the same issue as you guys, but reading this thread makes me think I should plan my setup more carefully before I start drilling holes all over the place!
